The objective of this seminar is twofold:
To identify the relevant research questions related to social entrepreneurship in Norway
To give recommendations to academic institutions in Norway developing educational programs in social entrepreneurship
Broadly defined, social entrepreneurship encompasses the activities and processes undertaken to discover, define and develop opportunities in order to enhance social wealth by creating new ventures or managing existing organizations in an innovative manner.
In the knowledge triangle connecting research, education and innovation, the entrepreneur functions as a catalyst by bringing the three elements together in a new enterprise. Entrepreneurs create and identify opportunities to apply knowledge in ways that make it accessible to the general public. As laid out in the Lund Declaration, European research needs to focus on the grand challenges facing the world. The new generation of entrepreneurs needs to be equipped to translate knowledge and ideas into products and services that will tackle the grand challenges and usher a sustainable and just society.
Norway is lagging behind in social entrepreneurial activity. In a report conducted by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), Norway ranks near the bottom as number 32 out of 49 countries. The low activity level in Norway merits attention.
Social entrepreneurship is an emerging academic field that lacks the clear epistemology of established fields. There are very few research programs and research-based courses offered at Norwegian academic institutions.
How can research and education enhance the effectiveness of measures taken to educate, facilitate, strengthen and invest in social entrepreneurs and social innovation?
