Doctor Honoris Causa
of
Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine

 

The Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Roman HRESKO, presented the achievements of the candidate for the honorary title, and in the meeting on August 29, 2025, the Academic Counsel of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine, unanimously decided to confer the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Professor h.c. mult., Doctor h.c. mult., Fil. Dr. Jan-Urban Sandal, Norway (Protocol No 11, 2025-08-29, Academic Counsel).

  • Rector of Fil. Dr. Jan-U. Sandal Institute (Kingdom of Norway) has made a significant contribution to the development of science and education and has also engaged in tireless activities aimed at strengthening international cooperation between Ukraine and Norway.
  • Since October 2012, with the signing of the cooperation agreement with Chernivtsi National University, a fruitful, long-lasting, and systematic partnership has begun between educational institutions.
  • During this time, Professor Sandal has organized and conducted 13 Social Entrepreneur Schools based at the Faculty of Economics, involving more than 150 students. He is a key initiator of a number of joint educational and scientific projects that not only enhance the level of international cooperation of the university but also contribute to the integration of Chernivtsi National University into the European academic space. Notably, 15 university students received funding for short-term internship programs in Norway, and 3 graduates from the Faculty of Economics studied in doctoral programs at the institute.
  • The activity of Jan-U. Sandal in supporting the scientific activity of the Faculty of Economics deserves special attention. At his initiative, the Joseph Schumpeter Economic Research Center was opened, and he is a co-organizer of scientific conferences of the Faculty of Economics, in particular, participating in the funding of events for the International Schumpeter Conference 'The Scientific Heritage of Joseph Schumpeter and Modernity: A Look from the Past to the Future' in 2013, 2016, and 2018.
  • The scientific interests of Prof. Jan-U. Sandal cover a wide range of contemporary research areas: social entrepreneurship and management, change management, and global economy. Jan Sandal is a true ambassador of the city of Chernivtsi and Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University in Norway and the world; his activities combine science, education, international diplomacy, and public service, making his contribution to the development of the university and the community truly invaluable.
  • After the voting, the Rector Ruslan BILOSKURSKY announced that the elected honorary doctors are invited to the festive meeting of the Scientific Council on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the university, where a solemn awarding of mantles will take place.

INAUGURATION CEREMONY

 

Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, represented by Minister Counselor Associate Prof. Dr. DO SON HAI, other Embassy representatives, and a large number of foreign prominent scientists, professors, students and guests associated with the Fil. Dr. Jan-U. Sandal International University Network attended the ceremony. In the opening speech, the Minister Counselor expressed his appreciation for the fruitful long-term collaboration between Prof. Acad. Dinh Van Nha, the owner of OMEGA Institute, and vice president of East Asian University, Hanoi and Fil. Dr. Jan-U. Sandal Institute, Norway and the educational programs delivered to Hanoi and to the students, academic staff and businesspeople through the partnership as well as the inauguration of the Sandal Private Museum. In his opening keynote address, Prof. Dr. Jan-Urban Sandal emphasized that the Sandal Private Museum opens up new opportunities for international scientific and educational cooperation in connection with the Institute's International University Network that includes nine universities and one university consortium in seven countries on four continents comprising more than 85,000 students and 20,000 faculty members. The purpose of the Sandal Private Museum is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display items of productive, artistic, cultural, or scientific significance for the education of the independent scientists as well as the public. The creation of artifacts demonstrates sophisticated and enlightened ways of analyzing the production function and the life and work of the entrepreneur. Sandal Private Museum represents a leading center for the production of new knowledge in its fields of interest, emphasizing cultural family heritage through objects of intrinsic values. Sandal Private Museum invites independent scientists, researchers, doctoral candidates, students, and members of the public. Sandal Private Museum offers a doctoral course, Documentation, Exhibition and Museum Science, course code, DM-01-A.

Present was a long line of prominent scientists, professors and students from various faculties of the university. In his opening speech, Rector Serhiy Shkarlet emphasized that Fil. Dr. Jan-U. Sandal Institute is the university's strongest international partner and the opening of the center will be of great scientific and educational importance, not only for the university and its activities, but also for Chernihiv city and county.
